Firm Overview and History


Smith, Tollefson, Rahrick & Cass is a general practice law firm with a special emphasis on litigation. It handles all aspects of legal work for individuals and small businesses and also does substantial work for larger companies in the area. Its areas of practice include criminal defense; personal injury and insurance litigation, including negligence, product liability, wrongful death, and insurance coverage, for both plaintiffs and defendants; dissolutions and other family law matters; employment law including discrimination claims and defense; corporate, partnership, and transactional law, including corporate acquisitions; estate planning, guardianships, conservatorships, and probate law; real estate law and title insurance; and debtor and creditor law. Members of the firm have handled cases in Minnesota District Courts, the Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court; United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; and the United States Tax Court. Smith, Tollefson, Rahrick & Cass has three active attorneys: Stephen J. Smith, Mark J. Rahrick, and Benjamin M. Cass. They are assisted by a certified paralegal, Barbara A. Firm History


Smith & Tollefson started in 1954. Then, as now, the firm emphasized litigation, especially personal injury work and criminal matters.

Richard E. Tollefson joined the firm in 1977 and continued in the general practice of law until his retirement in 2012. In 1981, John Smith died unexpectedly. That same year, Mr. Smith's son, Stephen J. Smith, who had been practicing with Rider, Bennett, Egan & Arundel in Minneapolis, joined Mr. Tollefson in the partnership. In 1994, Mark Rahrick joined the firm, and Benjamin Cass joined the firm in 2006. Barbara Zeman is a paralegal who first started with the firm in 1985. Assisting the legal professionals is a competent and experienced staff, with an average of over twenty-five years' experience.

Smith, Tollefson, Rahrick & Cass continues the fifty-year tradition of trial practice and also handles all aspects of legal matters for individuals, business concerns, and units of government. Some of the legal matters handled by the firm are found in the Areas of Practice section of this site.
